Leveling up
So I am about 3 weeks to nationals.
The training sessions have begun, both draft as well constructed.
As for constructed I am currently playing the chapin bant, but the list is quite tight and I am not figuring much slots to improve the deck. As for one matchup that really bothers me, which is mirror.
If all the lists look quite alike it will be very though to figure out some t3ch besides playing very focused and hope for better draws.
The mirror match is defined from turns 3 to 6. Those are the turns where you can squeeze a planeswalker, but you have to be careful so you don't get blowout by a vengevine from the other side. The first player to assure a planeswalker on his side of the table is the likely winner. The mirror match is defined by the most cards drawn, lands and creatures in table; there is no card that can be a total blowout and just reset the game. Planeswalkers help in those terms very well. Each turn you get value from them the closer you are to victory.
Elspeth is so awesome in the mirror, it's just the match where her value goes through the roof. There are not flyers in the deck, so having an elspeth to send even an noble through the air can only be stopped by a lost truths, but even a soldier token would kill it.
So besides that, I got nothing on constructed, I think the format is quite defined by now.
As for draft, I have testing very hard, forcing archetypes and testing some combinations.
These are my two last drafts:
// Lands
9 [UG] Island
8 [UG] Plains
// Creatures
1 [ROE] Halimar Wavewatch
2 [ROE] Caravan Escort
1 [ROE] Skywatcher Adept
2 [ROE] Makindi Griffin
1 [ROE] Totem-Guide Hartebeest
1 [ROE] Soulbound Guardians
2 [ROE] Hada Spy Patrol
1 [ROE] Sea Gate Oracle
1 [ROE] Knight of Cliffhaven
1 [ROE] Champion's Drake
// Spells
3 [ROE] Narcolepsy
1 [ROE] Time of Heroes
1 [ROE] Mammoth Umbra
1 [ROE] Smite
1 [ROE] Recurring Insight
1 [ROE] Nomads' Assembly
1 [ROE] Drake Umbra
1 [ROE] See Beyond
And this one is even sickier:
// Lands
8 [UG] Island
9 [UG] Plains
// Creatures
3 [ROE] Halimar Wavewatch
2 [ROE] Venerated Teacher
1 [ROE] Sphinx of Magosi
1 [ROE] Dawnglare Invoker
1 [ROE] Student of Warfare
1 [ROE] Artisan of Kozilek
1 [ROE] Knight of Cliffhaven
2 [ROE] Totem-Guide Hartebeest
1 [ROE] Makindi Griffin
2 [ROE] Caravan Escort
1 [ROE] Skywatcher Adept
1 [ROE] Frostwind Invoker
1 [ROE] Kabira Vindicator
// Spells
1 [ROE] Drake Umbra
1 [ROE] Hyena Umbra
1 [ROE] Puncturing Light
1 [ROE] Guard Duty
1 [ROE] Mammoth Umbra
That artisan sure is quite dislocated, it could be an Ikiral Outrider or a repel darkness I left on the board, but the card is quite powerful in case I get flooded :P
So, the draft bellow I am not going to talk about it, it's just oversickening, I mean, Student, Magosi, 2 teachers and so on.
The first one is quite a bit modest, I got only 13 creatures, but still got 2 sick auras and 3 narcolepsy with a totem beast. I wish I was passed at least 1 more. The Totem Beast is quite underrated. The creature is just too powerful if you got at least a narcolepsy or some nice auras, boar, mammoth, bear and drake as the best.
This is one of my favorite archetipes, UW levelers, it has got a sweet curve starting on turn 1 as well as nice removal and card draw. Plus you get things like totem + narcolepsy :)
Another archetype I tend to draft as well is UB levelers, but it's quite harder since black has not many playable commons. The main reason is vendetta, if you don't have at least a vendetta you really don't have a reason to go into black. I mean, induce despair is not good enough.
Plus, there's another one, maybe the most fun, it's G/R and sometimes B also tokens. It just makes lot of tokens with drones, hatcher's, predator's and invaders then with the red invoker, pennon blade or just hardcast crusher, many ways to kill, it's just awesome.
So, I feel quite confident to the nationals, maybe I can do better than last time, but I still got a ptq ahead, so, one step at a time...
